A strong foundation

The Case Alumni Foundation passes a $100 million milestone

The Case Alumni Foundation stands among the largest foundations in Northeast Ohio, according to Crain’s Cleveland Business, which recently ranked charitable foundations in the eight-county region according to their assets.

The CAF came in at No. 25 in the annual listing, with assets of $94.7 million as of June 30, 2025.

The CAF endowment continued to grow after the rankings were published, as investment income was realized. On Nov. 5, it reached $100,703,000 in value, crossing the $100 million threshold for the first time.

The Case Alumni Foundation (CAF) is an independent foundation supporting the mission of the Case Alumni Association (CAA), which was founded in 1885. The foundation, dating to 2004, protects and stewards endowed funds contributed by donors. It’s managed by a board of directors chaired by Eric Matyac, ’94, MS ’97, who is also the assistant treasurer of the Case Alumni Association.

At the November meeting of the CAA board, Matyac urged his fellow directors to consider how they might make a bigger impact in the years and decades ahead.

“It’s exciting, exciting stuff,” he said. “One of the things to think about is, ‘What are we doing at the next level?’”

The 289 endowed funds of the CAF generate income that provides support for engineering, science, and mathematics at CWRU. About half of the funds support undergraduate student scholarships. The balance are used to support faculty, graduate students, lab upgrades, engineering student groups, and the strategic initiatives of the dean of the Case School of Engineering.

Stephen Zinram, CEO of the Case Alumni Association, Inc., said the rising endowment reflects prudent financial stewardship and generous donors, both of which he credits to engaged alumni.

“Our alumni are very committed to Case and to helping the next generation become Case engineers and scientists,” he said. “Our job is to use these funds wisely and we take that commitment very seriously.”
